Lest We Forget
It is pleasantly surprising that 100 years after the beginning of the Great War (World War I) that remembrance for our soldiers, in all conflicts, over the years seems to have actually grown stronger, rather than waning with time. Maybe this is actually an unfortunate phenomenon brought on by the fact that Canada is presently and has often been in the near past engaged in active conflicts around the globe. The effects of the First World War are with us still today in many ways, not the least of which are the ongoing troubles in the Middle East. All over the Internet I see blogs and posts with a sort of 'lectury' tone, telling us not to take for granted what we have. The funny thing is that I don't think Canadians do take their freedoms for granted. We are well aware that it is the sacrifice of others that allows us to enjoy freedom of our vast land and all of our beautiful waterways. I believe we all take our two minutes of silence on the 11th quite seriously. Just another reason to be grateful to be Canadian.

FEW REMEMBER THE GERMAN NAVY'S ONLY ATTACK ON CANADA DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR
In August of 1918, Kapitanleutnant Richard Feldt of the Imperial German Navy guided his submarine, U-156, into Canadian waters in one of the most daring naval manoeuvres of the war. Feldt's orders were as simple as they were bold: stop communications between Europe and North America by snipping the strategic trans-Atlantic telegraph cable that came ashore in Canso, Nova Scotia. That communications cable made tiny Canso one of the most strategically vital hubs on either side of the Atlantic and the focus of Feldt's foray into Canadian waters.
