Danger of invasive species

I'm concerned that as an industry, we are not paying enough attention to the danger of invasive species entering our waters, particularly from trailer boaters who visit various bodies of water, sometimes within a short period of time and sometimes crossing the border in the process. Fishermen are especially likely to launch and fish in several bodies of water over a weekend or week of vacation.

In the United States there is a growing movement to require the boat and trailer both be flushed and thoroughly cleaned to prevent the spread of invasive species. Small eggs from Zebra Mussels are easily transported in cooling water, bilge water and other areas on the boat and trailer.

At the IBEX show in Tampa last fall, I attended a presentation by the Reverso people and they have developed a system to flush outboard engines very quickly and easily. It was developed to flush out salt water but could work very well for freshwater trailer boaters. Remember - many of them have a main engine and a kicker so in effect, lots of small fishing boats are actually twin engine installations.

My point here is that as an industry, we should embrace solutions like this to head off legislation that might later result in a more restricted business environment. Of course, we should work to protect the marine environment too!
