GOT A BEEF? - READER RESPONSE

"In the May 9 edition of News Week, I invited readers to air their opinions when I asked, "Got a Beef?"

The first response I received was actually not so much a beef as an important point and it came from Paul Gauthier, Manager of Waterfront Operations for the Town of Cobourg. The weather and boating conditions on Lake Ontario can blow up fast and the lake is very open - there's little shelter for a boater with a mechanical breakdown. Here's what he wrote:

"Hi Andy, I read your "Got A Beef" segment in this week's installment of Boating Industry Canada News Week. It brought to mind an organization that provides a vital service to the Canadian boating community, but which many boaters and boating professionals may not be aware of. I am referring to the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA).

Members of this group not only volunteer their time training and responding to vessels in distress they also donate a huge asset base. The three Joint Rescue Coordination Centers rely heavily on CCGA in managing marine emergency situations. Countless boaters have been assisted since the founding Auxiliary in 1978. The auxiliary also provides a support role to the Canadian Military through joint training exercises. Our unit, Brighton Auxiliary Rescue Unit # 515, out of Brighton routinely trains with 424 Search and Rescue squadron out of CFB Trenton. It is quite an experience having a helicopter hover 20ft. above your vessel, while underway, as a SAR Tech is lowered to the aft deck.

I think that if more boaters were aware of the "guardian angel" services this organization provides, and the professionalism of the organization, it would go a long way to making recreational boaters feel more secure on the water. If you would like to get a better understanding of the scope of the service provided by CCGA please follow the attached link. http://ccga-ca.com/about.php#mission

Paul raises a very important point here and I really hope our readers take a moment to click the link and learn more about the CCGA. And, it would be great offer some support too!

Our thanks to Paul Gauthier for this!

NMMA "DAY ON THE HILL" 2017

Best results so far!

On May 9th, 2017, the National Marine Manufacturer's Association (NMMA Canada) held their 5th "Day on the Hill" lobby event to raise the profile of Canada's marine industry and to bring our most important issues to the attention of our Federal politicians and key bureaucrats.

This was the most successful "Day on the Hill" so far, with the largest schedule of meetings and also subjectively, the most positive reception from the politicians. They are getting to know us! Read More
