Is High Water Affecting You?

The weather forecast looks like the rain will stay with southern Ontario for another week and the water flow through the Great Lakes is already breaking records.

Toronto Island park permits have been cancelled until July 31, a decision that affects 90 groups including summer campers, weddings and community groups. Many boaters cruise to the islands from GTA marinas and yacht clubs.

The Toronto Star interviewed Shawnda Walker, the spokesperson for Centreville Amusement Park, who remains optimistic in the face of the unprecedented challenges.

"We would be absolutely shocked if Centreville is still closed at the end of July," she told Metro, explaining that the amusement park's area of the island is in better shape than most, but they're going "week-to-week."

News of the Island's continued closure comes after a positive report on projected Lake Ontario water levels.

The analysis, by the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board (ICJ), showed the lake could return to pre-flooding levels by mid-to-late-June. The rain now forecast for the coming week may make that optimistic.

Much of the recovery along the shoreline will rely on the ICJ releasing a massive amount of water into the St. Lawrence.

The commission is releasing the maximum of 10,200 cubed metres of water per second. It has only done this twice before, in 1993 and 1998.

Gail Faveri, the Canadian secretary for the ICJ, explained that releasing any more water would make it unsafe for boats. That same issue exists for the Trent Severn Waterway who is reporting many lock closures (see "STATUS OF NAVIGATION FOR THE TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY" story below).

So, are high water levels affecting you and your business? I'd be interested to hear from our readers!
