OUTBOARD POWER IS DRIVING BOAT AND YACHT DESIGN INNOVATION
The announcement last week that Volvo Penta has purchased Seven Marine is very interesting, given the recent innovations in boat and yacht designs. Just last week we wrote about the new outboard powered boats from Jeanneau that are coming to Canada. These are attractive and very innovative day boat / cruisers and they need big power to run.
Next week Canadian Yachting is off to Newport to run the MJM Yachts 35z - their latest new design and a boat that comes with twin 300 hp outboards.
Volvo Penta didn't have an outboard line to match up with the latest in boat and yacht design innovations, much of which is occurring around outboard power, so the Seven Marine acquisition is really quite clever.
I do find it amusing however, that Volvo Penta is starting off with just two models at 557 and 627 horsepower. Obviously, these outboards are not designed for trolling!
On the other hand, we are increasingly seeing innovative new boat designs rigged with big outboards in triple and quad configurations.
Mathematically, four 300 horsepower outboards could be replaced by twin 627 hp Seven Marine engines and probably achieve comparable performance.
This might be just great crossing Biscayne Bay on your way to fish for Wahoo in the Atlantic, but are we going to see boats rigged up with this kind of power in Lake Simcoe? Sounds crazy but I think we will, given how many large boats are now outboard powered. Outboards free up a ton of interior space, may save considerable weight, deliver stellar performance and offer an ease of operation and ownership that makes them appealing.
This is certainly the active and exciting part of the market - let's see what happens now that Volvo Penta joins Mercury, Yamaha, BRP and Suzuki!
