LOOKING BACK - LOOKING AHEAD

We are at the half-way point in the summer of 2017 and it seems appropriate to look back on the first half of the summer as we look ahead to the second half.
First, I'll make you a deal; I will stop writing about the weather if you'll stop thinking about it! Extreme weather events are out of our control. Some areas still don't have operational fuel docks, pumpout stations and other facilities. Our hearts go out to those business owners and their customers alike.

Anecdotally though, I'm hearing stories of record-breaking sales levels and that many people are having a great summer season. I bet there are many News Week readers who are flat out on customer boats while their own boat is still in storage. At least, I'd feel better to think that!

You see, my 2017 pet project is building a new rowboat and offering it for sale in limited numbers. It's something I've dreamed about doing for years. The design is an authentic 1890s double-ended St. Lawrence rowing skiff that is fiberglass and with a full interior liner.

The prototype was finished last fall and rowed for the first time in November. Since then, I've been so busy with everybody else's projects that this summer is half over and my boat is still in test mode!

However, it needed outrigger oarlocks for better balance and speed. I designed and fabricated those and they work great…so far so good.

In the olden days people would row for miles, turning around to look ahead once in a while but we're not willing to put up that much effort anymore. I went to my friends at CC Marine Distributors, purchased a very large pontoon boat mirror and built a mount for the gunwale.

It works beautifully! Next, I need to improve my shop facilities to get the wood working side going to add teak gunwales and seats and get the vacuum infusion system set up. Still lots to do but I am encouraged. The boat rows like a dream - fast, easy and very seaworthy. I'm finally out rowing more often and thanks to my new mirror, I can look ahead while I'm looking back.
