YOUR HOME PORT

What could be more welcoming than your home port? It's the place you are most familiar with, it's where you know people and my guess is that your marina may very well be a kind of a home port for your customers.

If there was no fuel available though, do you think people would look for a new home port? I think they might have no choice. Last week we wrote about the short hours at the fuel docks, with marinas closing at 6:00pm. I did get a couple of comments back on this, so it's kept me thinking about this particular topic.

There are some very complex psychological and strategic plans that go into things as mundane as a Walmart store. These are designed very effectively to lower their cost of operation and increase your bill at the checkout. Do we think that way in the marina business?

You can be the smartest and most savvy marketer in the wakeboard boat business, with the latest innovations and the sexiest boats, but if there is no fuel available, your customers are not going to be a customer for long. So let's think about the impact of fuel…

First, when people arrive for the weekend, I think the psychology is that if there's no fuel in the boat, they'll wind up doing other things and the boat generally becomes de-emphasized over the weekend.

Instead, if people arrived on a Friday night and the boat had full tanks and was ready to go, I think the convenience of that will encourage them to cast off and head out.

Overall, the more hours people put on their boat, the more you can sell them service, new parts, accessories, upgraded stereo systems and water toys of all kinds.

I think the marine industry in Canada is not talking enough about fuel accessibility. It's not just a marina issue, anybody who builds and sells motors, boats, fishing tackle and anything else to do with recreational boating, should care deeply about the availability of fuel.

In another story in this week, we go to Jackson's Point Harbour on Lake Simcoe. It's the only municipal Marina and was one of the few fuel sales and pump out services on that part of the lake. It is now closed. How much has that cut into boat usage in the area? Our industry needs data to help us make smart decisions, better serve our customers and better sell the whole range of our products and services.
