FUEL ACCESSIBILITY AND FUEL TAXES - Plus New Industry Calendar!

First, Boating Industry Canada will be launching a new Industry Calendar for 2018. A total of 7,500 Calendars will be printed and distributed to our marine industry circulation lists. As an added bonus, Calendar advertisers will get their ad on the Boating Industry Canada News Week newsletter and website. Look for more details next week!

Recently, I wrote about issues of fuel accessibility and the potential business value of longer hours at the fuel docks.

There is another issue that I had lost sight of. It is the road tax that is included in every litre of fuel sold. Paul Gauthier, Manager of Waterfront Operations for the Town of Cobourg, wrote this letter to remind us all.

Paul wrote,"Fuel accessibility does have a significant impact on the marine industry. There is another aspect to the fuel issue which also has a significant impact on the marina industry; that is price. Fuel at marinas is almost always higher than at roadside gas stations. I often find myself explaining why that is as I pump hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars' worth of fuel into a customer's boat. While there are a number of reasons the one that most surprises boat owners is the fact we (marinas) pay "street price" for our fuel."

"Street prices include a substantial "road tax" which boaters are forced to pay. Last time I checked very few boats navigate down the roads and highways of Ontario. Although I must confess I have seen a few boats on the shoulders of the road. I suspect most had been towed there!"

Paul continued to suggest that our marine trades associations could provide a tremendous value added service for it's members by negotiating a group discount purchasing program for fuel.

Also, I recall that there used to be a fuel tax rebate that my father applied for years ago. Perhaps the industry could lobby to have that reinstated? In the United States, that road tax money is returned to support boating safety and other aspects of the marine industry.

I'd say Paul Gauthier has a good idea. What do you think?
