GREAT MOMENTUM GOING INTO THE FALL SHOWS
I hope you are as positive as I am about the great momentum we seem to have, going into the fall and winter boat show season. I think things are looking great. Listening to the CBC show, On The Money last night, host Peter Armstrong talked about 4.5% GDP growth in Canada. That's a stunning number!
We just came back from the IBEX show in Tampa. Only days after Hurricane Irma went through, the show went ahead as planned and if boats or displays failed to make it to the show, you would not have known that. The industry breakfast was sold out with over 700 people packed into the ballroom and listening to the presentations.
Canadian Yachting magazine publisher Greg Nicoll has just returned from the Annapolis Boat Show and again he felt the mood was very buoyant [forgive the pun!] with lots of exciting new products on display and good crowds.
A point to note was a comment made by David Schmidt, an American writer who occasionally contributes to Canadian Yachting magazine. David said there weren't nearly as many masts at the sailboat show, but they were a lot taller!
The dollar volumes have more than returned to the boat business since the downturn in 2008, but not the unit volumes. There seem to be many fewer but much larger boats being sold in all categories. The family 16 foot outboard runabout or even a 19 foot stern drive, has all but disappeared, replaced by 21 to 24 foot specialized water sports boats, high-powered fishing boats all the way up to million-dollar day boats. Big changes in the product line-ups!
Again this year I will miss Halloween at home as I travel to the Fort Lauderdale international Boat show. It will be interesting to see what's on display there and I look forward to the industry breakfast which always has a wealth of statistics on the industry.
One more thing - this is distributor show season. I know a lot of our readers will be traveling to distributor shows and I plan to be on hand for the CC Marine Distributors Show in Markham, manning the Boating Industry Canada booth starting on Sunday, October 22. Hope to see you at CC Marine show!
