ATTRACTING NEW BOATERS THROUGH RENTALS AND CHARTERS

Lately we've been talking about ways to help new people get in boating. There is a lot of interest around the NMMA's Discover Boating program, now there's the STARTboating program, a Canadian effort funded by Public Safety Canada to help inexperienced people start boating safely, and in News Week recently, our readers have been talking about smaller boats like canoes kayaks and rowboats as good ways for people to get in started in boating.

Here's another route - people could follow their more experienced friends when they rent a boat or do a charter.

Places like the Lefroy Yacht Club 45 minutes north of Toronto, offers the Carefree Boat Club which is part of the Carefree Boat Club group with many club locations across the United States as well as one more Canadian location in Montreal. They offer training for novice boaters. The Carefree concept is that you can have access to one of their fleet without having to buy a boat, service or maintain it either.

We are hearing that more and more marinas are now making boats available for rental, even very expensive ones.

The charter business is another way people can experience boating and cruising without making a big personal investment.

It makes sense for experienced sailors to charter a sailboat with crew first, in places like the British Virgin Islands. If they love it, graduate to a bare boat charter. This has become a big business as more and more people realize what a great southern vacation it can be.

I know Canadian operations like Cooper Boating in BC have been very successful for decades but we suspect that Canadians in Ontario and Quebec may not think about chartering in their home waters. But why not?

The le boat organization Europe's number one boating vacation company sees a great opportunity on The Rideau Canal. Tourists from Europe can get a flight to Canada, come to the new le boat location in Smiths Falls and charter one of their boats to cruise on the Rideau Canal. And they can train people to run their cruise boats. You need not be an experienced boater.

There seems to be a wave of interest in boat rentals and charters coming and it could be a great way to bring new people into boating.
