THE VALUE OF INSPIRATION
The last few weeks have seen a number of industry get-togethers including the Atlantic Marine Trade Association's Annual General Meeting, Boating BC's Annual Conference and this past weekend, the Boating Ontario Conference and 50th Anniversary celebration.
I think it's human nature to have a routine and to do our work the same way every day. But, we also have to recognize that the world is changing around us and new ideas are coming out all the time.
I hope that you were one of the many people who attended these industry events and supported your marine trade association. Some of my associates were at the Boating BC event and said it was a huge success. I attended the Boating Ontario Conference and I can tell you that the agenda included a wide range of important and thought-provoking topics. There was also a valuable opportunity to interact with our peers and share our challenges and our solutions.
But I think the most important thing was the inspiration.
The timing is excellent for these industry conferences because everybody I've spoken to seems to be coming off a strong summer from a business standpoint. Everyone is feeling good. Boat show season starts in just a few weeks and nothing could be better than to head into that with a positive attitude.
I learned a number of new things at the Boating Ontario Conference but in particular, I enjoyed the sessions with keynote speaker Sam Dantzler. His opening session he called "Chasing Blue". Chasing Blue highlights that internal drive in everyone to chase their dreams, and how owning a boat is the manifestation of that dream for many people. It's all about psychology in marine retailing and winning over a customer's "chase" will ultimately mean more sales and profitability for your business.
He brought the same high-energy, entertaining and eye-opening approach to discussing how to improve service shop efficiency and customer satisfaction. I feel confident in saying that everybody left those sessions feeling inspired to "up our game" in the future.
Attending your marine trade associations annual conference is really a terrific investment in yourself and your own attitude towards your future success. I'll be there again next year!
