LOOKING FORWARD TO 2018

Among the marina owners and boat dealers I have spoken to this fall, 2017 has turned out to be a good year, and for many, a very good year. In spite of unfavourable weather conditions at the start of the season in many areas, the boaters went boating and the buyers showed up.

The cottage boat market and in particular, specialized boats for wake surfing, fishing and of course, the pontoon boat segment, have been strong. Big power boats seem to get bigger and while that means the dollar volumes are good, the unit numbers are smaller. This seems to be a continuation of the 'rich get richer' phenomenon. The picture is not as rosy for the keelboat market which seems to be suffering from the aging population wave.

But overall, I'm really saying that we seem to be doing well without any big wind at our backs and that suggests to me, that we are enjoying a fundamental increase in the interest in boating. Some dealers that I have spoken to quietly acknowledge that they are seeing an increase in boating participation among segments of the Canadian population that are not of the traditional Anglo Saxon background.

That's something I have been expecting to see for a while now and it could be a real saviour for the industry in the coming years.

I am hopeful for that because more and more, our overall North American economy feels like we're climbing to a pinnacle of some kind. There is always a cycle and a decline is surely coming, in an economic sense. The unbelievable and unconventional presidency of Donald Trump has unnerved the world. He has said absolutely scandalous and irresponsible things, or at least he has "Tweeted" them.

The Russian investigations and other activities of the past year have many people talking about the likelihood of a presidential impeachment. Would that ever happen? If it did, would it precipitate a stock market crash?

We're in a bull market that by historic terms should have ended already. Some stock market analysts and commentators are saying that this feels like 1929 but my personal opinion is that things are very different now than they were then.

I think we will continue to see large amounts of baby boomer retirement money flowing into the stock markets. I think the Canadian real estate market will start to regain its momentum again in the New Year and it looks like interest rates will remain at very manageable levels here in Canada.

So, I think that we are heading for another solid year at least for the first half of 2018. I'm predicting a solid boat show season and perhaps most importantly, I have a sense that a growing number of new Canadians are looking at boating as a desirable activity. Let's see what happens when the doors open at the winter boat shows. For now, I'm crossing my fingers!

And, from the staff at Kerrwil Publications, Canadian Yachting magazine and Boating Industry Canada News Week, we wish you a Merry Christmas, happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
