TORONTO BOAT SHOW OFF TO A FLYING START

Preview Day at the 2018 Toronto International Boat Show was again well attended but the Official Opening Day, Saturday, January 13 saw a very busy show floor from opening till closing and I observed a lot of positive sights as I watched the people in the aisles.

There seemed to be a good number of young families with fathers carrying children on their shoulders while mom pushed the stroller. Also interesting was my perception that we were seeing a more diversified ethnic attendance, at least on that first Saturday and the people I spoke to at our Canadian Yachting magazine display seemed knowledgeable about boating and very engaged with the show.

I was told that by midday, the underground parking was full and that the surface lots were also close to full, suggesting that the attendance was really strong.

Line-ups at the food courts were daunting and many of the displays seemed to have a steady level of activity. One dealer I spoke to shared with me that they had sold 14 boats on the first day, double what the company had achieved in the 2017 show. The daily exhibitor newsletter reported that the Buy a Boat & Win contest, which was designed to help track the number of actual boats sold at the show, was already reporting 68 boats had been sold.

The show begins to report actual attendance numbers after the first couple of days, but my sense of it is that the 2018 Toronto International Boat Show is off to a flying start. It will be interesting to see how the week winds up in Toronto. Cold weather and some snow are in the forecast. And of course, the Vancouver International Boat Show opens Wednesday, January 17 and our people in British Columbia will be reporting on that next week.

Again this year, we are sponsors of the NMMA Canada Industry Breakfast at the Toronto show and I am privileged to be the host and moderator. Hope we see you there!
