INNOVATION AND THE "COOL FACTOR"

I'd say the Toronto International Boat Show 2018 edition, the 60th Anniversary for the show, was a success for the exhibitors and attendees alike… and innovative new boats were a big part of the "cool factor" that seems to drive sales.

The North American economy continues to be strong and in spite of Trump, Kim Jong Un, Brexit, Russia investigation, NAFTA and other factors, the stock market is pushing up to new all-time highs every few days, seemingly oblivious to the previously mentioned anxiety factors.

My opinion is that global economic conditions are generally good and in North America, the baby boom generation continues to push up the stock markets with a lifetime of investment savings.

There is money out there.

And, at the Toronto International Boat Show, there were lots of things to attract affluent buyers. My vote for the most innovative big boat was the Sea Ray SLX 400 with the side that folds down to become a huge extension of the cockpit, swim platform and deck area just above the water level. It's a huge day boat, has storage for things like standup paddle boards and it's like having a floating island of your own. Very creative!

Fishing boats and pontoons continue to evolve with specialized new features and especially the pontoons are getting outrageous horsepower to add to their "cool factor". You need a sense of humor to own a 60 mph pontoon boat.

The wake sports boats lead the way in outrageous graphics and metal flake finishes. They are all about being cool. [Although I have to wonder what happens to these expensive tow sports boats when they fall out of fashion!]

Then, we have a contingency of boats that are classic designs like the Rossiter Lauden rowboat and the Canadian Electric Boat Company launch the Bruce 22 originally designed by Ian Bruce.

My last mention is the Greenline 39 which splits the difference between cool and classic with some classic lines, Eurostyle interior and cutting-edge diesel electric hybrid power. It's been getting steady traffic throughout the show.

People are looking for something different - something special - something innovative that catches their eye. It's been an exciting show!
