MARINE INDUSTRY SKILLS SHORTAGE CONTINUES

You didn't need to be at the 2018 NMMA Canada Boating Industry breakfast to learn that there is a shortage of skilled technicians in the marine industry, but if you were not there, you missed a great breakfast and a stellar presentation by Wells Fargo's Senior Economist, Tim Quinlan.

Quinlan showed an impressive range of useful information and business guidance for 2018. Overall, his measured and thoughtful analysis suggests that 2018 should be another good solid year for the marine industry.

There are variables of course, so the outcome is not 100% certain but things look good.

However, the labour picture looks bad. We are certain to experience labour shortages in the marine industry. I'd say that is 100% certain. There will be 20% fewer 20-year-olds in Canada over the next four years. That is a simple matter of the number of births - there were 20% fewer births 20 years ago. Immigration may help the situation, but it won't be enough. In 2018, you will have trouble finding the young people that your marinas and businesses normally rely on for seasonal help. At Boating Industry Canada, we are going to do something about it. Read this column next week for more steps we can take to attract more young people into the marine industry. And, I'll be looking for your help.
