Boating Industry Canada's Newsweek

SHARE YOUR MARINE INDUSTRY CAREER STORY

If you are reading the Boating Industry Canada News Week newsletter, you're certain to be employed somewhere in the marine industry. Each of us has our own reason for how, or why we got into this business, but if you have been in it for a while, and you're still in it, I think you might have a story to share.

Our regular readers know that there have been a number of stories or editorial columns in Boating Industry Canada dating back many years, talking about the shortage of skilled technicians and the general shortage of young people entering the marine industry.

A decline in the birth rate that we noted in last week's Editor's Message will be responsible for the fact that from 2017 to 2022, there will be a 20% decline in the number of 20-year-olds in the Canadian population. That's going to hit us hard. We will need to compete for young people. To do that, I think we need to show those young people some personal information - give them proof that there are good career opportunities in marine.

Not everybody is going to want to do this, but we invite you to share your marine industry career story, particularly if you feel that the business has been a positive experience for you. The concept is to build a little online library of examples of individuals who have made a career for themselves in the marine industry.

You don't have to be rich, you don't have to be in a senior position and you don't have to be a business owner to be someone who is enjoying their life and succeeding in the marine industry. In fact, it would be great to wind up with a library of success stories from all the various areas of our industry.

So, here's what we plan to do - next week there will be an online form to guide you in telling your story. This way you can simply answer a series of general questions in your own words. It doesn't have to be a grand or long-winded story.

Our intention is to build an online archive of these very credible and personal stories so young people can access the list by career type and choose the stories that interest them. We are hoping that many marine technicians will contribute their story, but we would really like to hear from a wide variety of people; marina owners, boat repair and boatbuilders, people with corporate jobs in the marine industry, yacht brokers, hardware manufacturers, electronics people - the field is wide open as long as its marine.

I hope you'll give it some thought. Would you be willing to share your story?
