BOAT SHOW BAROMETER AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
In my 40+ years around the boat business one thing has occurred to me; boat buyers are successful individuals who are smart and probably, very savvy about investing.
As much as we might want a new boat, it seems like nobody ever 'needs' a new boat so, when times are good, sales are good, and when uncertainty creeps into the mix, the boat buyers are the first to stop buying.
I would call the boat business one of the best 'leading indicators' an investor could have. So how does the boat show barometer read this spring?
Here in Canada, 2018 got off to a great start at the Toronto International Boat Show with reports of strong sales and a positive attitude from many of the dealers. The Vancouver and Halifax shows both seem to have delivered strong sales results as well, and we assume that the shows in Ottawa, Calgary and elsewhere also enjoyed a positive year.
I am just on my way home from the Miami International Boat Show and also the concurrent Miami Yacht Show. Things seem to be changing at the Yacht Show on Collins Avenue. The show owners just introduced an admission charge at the gate for the first time in their 30-year history and it looked like the crowds were way down. On Saturday, February 17, they announced that they are moving venues (see the story below) so, I don't think we can get a good read off that.
The Miami International Boat Show in contrast, seemed very busy and I suspect that the boat business south of the border will continue to do well for a time, depending on the increasing uncertainty in the American economy and their political scene.
As a reader of News Week, I wonder if you are following our weekly marine Stock Report? There are some large corporations that are publicly traded in the boat business and companies like Brunswick, Johnson Outdoors and others, seem to be having a great year.
We are also delighted to report that already, five different readers have sent us in a their personal Career Profile to begin our News Week Career library. We hope that these personal testimonials will attract more young people to join our industry in the future. It's well-known that the marine industry needs good people at all levels from technicians to marina owners and boatbuilders. There is lots of opportunity.
We encourage you to contribute your own story. Just click the link for a simple form that you can fill in, save and email back. We'd like to get a broad selection of about 20 stories to launch the Library.
