DRESS FOR SUCCESS
We have just finished mailing the April issue of Canadian Yachting magazine and the theme is Nautical Fashions - "Look Good - Feel Great!" Our purpose is to encourage our thousands of print edition readers, their families and their friends to all go out and invest a little bit of money in the specialized nautical clothing that will make their day on the water a much more enjoyable experience.
We all know how much impact the weather can have on our industry. Even the 'threat' of thunderstorms is enough to discourage a lot of people from even going to their boat. Like you I'm sure, I have been watching the long-range weather forecasts with great interest and my overall sense of this is that they're predicting a slow start to our summer 2018 and a fair bit of rain through the spring.
When we suggest that you dress for success, the idea is for you to dress in some of the latest nautical fashions yourself, for your own comfort of course, but also to set an example for your customers. This summer, the weather could be a much less significant factor in their boating enjoyment if everybody is dressed in the latest high-tech materials and light-weight layered fashions.
The advances in the materials and their performance are more than just significant, they are game-changing. The right clothing can turn what used to be a miserable day into an exciting, pleasurable adventure.
In Canadian Yachting, Kris Hughes writes about how to stay warm and dry (or cool and dry) this summer. His important article covers the concept of layering your clothing, how synthetic fabrics wick away moisture that can rob your body of heat, and how the latest technical fabrics are both waterproof and breathable. You are certainly aware of Gore-Tex; this fabric is made from ePTFE, or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, which makes it microporous.
This is how Gore-Tex and other similar fabrics can both breathe and yet also shed water. As an industry where many of us spend a lot of time outdoors, these nautical fashions can be an important part of our toolbox as well as our professional look.
Of course, if you own a marina, work at a yacht club or in other ways are active in the industry outdoors, demonstrate to other boaters how to look good and stay comfortable. If you can, consider retailing a line of this sort of clothing. It just makes good sense for everybody.
Also, just a reminder that we would still love a few more Career Profiles to add to the new library so consider telling your story. Have a look at the simple to use form
