Boating Industry Canada's Newsweek

WE'RE NOT ALONE…

Other industries are also running short of bright young people and I was quietly amused to read the latest issue of Car & Driver (one of the biggest American car enthusiast magazines) to see a four-page feature on their shortages of auto techs.

The story was titled "Wanted - A shortage of qualified technicians has left service departments scrambling to find new talent". Sound familiar? Obviously, we are not alone.

And, the Car & Driver article is following the same strategy that we developed back in January 2017 at the Toronto International Boat Show two years ago. At the Industry Breakfast, we offered to run your Career Opportunities job listings from News Week in our Canadian Yachting Onboard electronic newsletters.

The concept is to reach out to consumers - individuals who are already boating enthusiasts and share the job opportunities that they might find attractive, either for themselves or perhaps a young person they know.

At the Industry Breakfast this year, we took this a step further and invited our readers to share a brief profile of their own career in the marine industry, the satisfaction they find here, and the quality of life that they enjoy.

We are very grateful to the people who took time to fill in the form we posted online and send us back their own personal Career Profile. These are all very positive and really express the satisfaction of being in this business. We promised that we would put those Career Profiles online to share the information and with this issue, the first of those profiles can now be found here.

We think it's very compelling to hear from real people who are enjoying a rewarding career in the marine industry.

Unfortunately, at the moment we only have seven profiles. Am I to assume that there are only seven people who like their career in the marine industry? I know those people are not alone either. Everybody I work with and everybody in the industry that I speak to, likes what they do for a living. Most seem to love it!

Here's the link to the form again. If you haven't already done so, maybe now you will consider sharing your Career Profile. Your story might persuade a young person to join our industry. And maybe that will be the person you need.
