Boating Industry Canada's Newsweek

COUNT ON HUMAN OPTIMISM

If you've been in the boat business for more than one season, you know how critically important the weather is, so like me, you are probably checking the long-range forecast for your area, praying for sun and warm temperatures.

As I write this, Ontario is in the grip of a winter storm that has brought inches of ice pellets to the street where I live, deep enough that I could barely walk to the corner and later tonight, the forecast is for this mess to melt as heavy rains come in to dump as much as 30 mm of precipitation around Ontario and the Great Lakes. Quebec and the Maritimes are in the path of the same storm.

British Columbia is famous for rain but it looks like BC will be enjoying many sunny days through to the end of April and some potentially delightful weather except that the temperatures are going to be below seasonal norms.

On the opposite end of the country, Atlantic Canada has a mixture of rain, cloud through April but a fair bit of sun especially towards the end of the month when average temperatures there will be a bit higher than the seasonal norms.

So, we aren't jumping into spring very quickly but here is my message; I think we can count on human optimism to be looking for good weather and I also think it's early enough in the spring that your customers will overlook the present rain and below seasonal temperatures.

I always feel that things somehow even out and although we should never minimize or overlook the big picture of global warming and the damaging effects that is having, I think that we're going to see much more attractive weather when we get to May and that's when it really counts.

We should all cross our fingers for a great May and be thankful for getting the bad weather out of the way now!
