WHAT'S IN THE BOX? …AND WHAT'S UP ON PARLIAMENT HILL?
Last week we talked about the odds of winning and for you, the odds of winning are a lot higher if you can re-engage with your boat show leads from the winter.
The problem is that re-igniting their interest in buying a boat from you is tough to do in a phone call. The boat show was months ago and the prospective client is unlikely to remember you personally. Sending an email is fast and cheap, but most of us get so many emails that we just block and delete without ever reading them.
So, I suggested the idea of mailing your prospects a box. Especially if it's a plain brown box personally addressed, a box is an intriguing thing. I believe a high percentage of them will be opened with care.
Mailing them a box is an attention-getting and creative way to start the conversation back up but then the question is; what do you put in the box?
Obviously, your business card. That's one thing. At the bottom, include a brochure for the boats you were talking about. A picture is worth a thousand words.
Then, if your handwriting is legible, a brief handwritten note is very special. To say in your own handwriting, "Dear Mr. Smith, I enjoyed talking to you at the Toronto Boat Show about a new 21 foot Fish Slayer XL with the 200 hp Mercury. There's still time to get you a new one for this summer. Are you interested in discussing it? Thanks George".
I think your odds of winning are much higher with a creative approach.
Speaking of the creative approach, I have just returned from the NMMA Canada's sixth (and most successful) "Day On The Hill" event in Ottawa. I was invited to join NMMA Canada President Sara Anghel, their Board of Directors and Marine Trade Association leaders as they met with Members of Parliament, senior staff and key ministry people to raise the profile of boating and bring our important issues to their attention.
Once you get to participate in an event like this, you learn how busy these people are. Their meetings often start as early as 7:30 and they have one group after another every half hour most of the day. How can we expect the government to remember to consider boating as they craft new legislation around access to water, harbours, the environment and matters of trade and regulation?
Just like a good advertising campaign, our success depends on reach and frequency - every year we reach out to more people, and every year that we attend, they become more familiar with boating and our important issues. This too improves our odds of winning!
