FIRE EXTINGUISHERS - KIDDE RECALL

Finally! The nice weather seems to have arrived and the ice is out (in most places) although flooding is now an issue, but we do seem to be heading for spring launch and maybe a hot summer.

It always seems to turn into a scramble to get into the water and get going but do your best to ensure your customers are properly equipped before they cast off.

A good safety suggestion and potential profit builder is to have people replace their onboard fire extinguishers. If they have an old one, keep it as a back up and get a new fire extinguisher in case of a real emergency.

A B.C. reader kindly sent us a letter that reminded me about both the importance of fire extinguishers and also of the recent mass recall of Kidde Fire Extinguishers. He wrote, "Regarding the recall of Kidde fire extinguishers, you may be interested in my situation.I purchased several Kidde Fire Extinguishers in the USA all of the same model in the late 70s and 80s for our home. When I saw this recall dating back to 1973, I checked mine to see if they were the type to be returned.Mine all had plastic handles and flimsy light plastic safety pins supposedly to protect from accidentally activating when moving the extinguishers.I called the Canadian number and was told since the serial number they were looking for did not appear on my extinguishers mine were not included in the recall.

Thinking further about the situation I wondered if some confusion was caused since I purchased mine in the USA and the numbering system and models might have been slightly different.I called and spoke to two US agents and both stated mine were definitely covered by the recall.Within a few weeks new extinguishers did arrive.I then packaged up and returned mine to the designated agency free of charge. These new extinguishers included much more durable metal handles and metal safety pins. Since many of your readers may shop in the USA, they may have run into this situation and not realized there could be differences in the identification of Canadian and American fire extinguishers."

Share that with your clients but recommend fresh new fire extinguishers. A fire onboard is always serious.
