Boating Industry Canada's Newsweek

HOW CAN WE WEATHER EXTREME WEATHER?

I don't want to disappoint you right off the bat, but I really don't have an answer for this. Clearly though, it seems we are going to have to learn how to weather extreme weather events to keep the boating industry building and booming.

As I write this, our readers in both British Columbia and Atlantic Canada are suffering devastating flood conditions that have been worsening for several days. News reports we get in Ontario suggest that the already hard-hit Kelowna area is about to get even more water due to record-breaking high temperatures that are causing the high-level snowpack to melt and run off very quickly.

On the other side of Canada, Atlantic Canada and especially New Brunswick, is also suffering terrible flooding. There are huge property losses and obviously a delayed start to the pleasure boating season.

Ontario and Québec were also delayed this year by a couple of weeks as unseasonably cold temperatures in the early spring meant that the ice wasn't out as early as it usually is. People are saying they are two weeks or more behind schedule in getting boats into the water for the Victoria Day long weekend.

Extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common and all I can say is that we need to all consider ways that we can best adapt our individual businesses to weather these sorts of setbacks. Of course that's a challenge when many of those businesses are located at the water's edge.

For our customers, boating has always been weather dependent anyway, but it seems to be growing significantly worse. All we can say is that we hope your business and your customers are able to get off to a good start this season.
