Help Wanted
Last week we had 19 different career opportunities advertised in News Week and the jobs included Senior Service School Instructor, Tour Boat Captain, Yacht Charter Manager as well as many Marine Tech opportunities. Clearly we need people.
I just returned from an outstanding "FRP Process for the Manager" session at Polynt-Reichhold in Kansas City. It brought together 30 or 40 composites industry people from across North America and just like here, there was a lot of talk about labor shortages. During the trip, I read in USA Today that companies are being forced to increase wages in order to attract workers.
There is both good news and bad; the good news being that companies can find people if the wages go up, but the bad news is that the work ethic doesn't seem to be anything like what we have long gotten from our now retiring baby boomer employees.
It seems like the "live to work" group is being replaced by a "work to live" mentality. At the Polynt sessions in Kansas City the majority of attendees were relatively young people - up-and-coming managers who did seem very dedicated to what they were doing professionally, so that's certainly a positive. But as young managers, they were talking about a lack of work ethic among their workers. Money isn't the only reward that a job can offer.
Next week I will report in more detail on the event at Polynt-Reichhold but in a nutshell, these were excellent sessions delivered by top experts in the fiberglass production industry and offered at no cost. Qualified attendees just had to get there and the educational sessions clearly were really answering questions and providing new knowledge that people really wanted.
It occurs to me that other companies in the marine industry would be helping us all if they were to offer similar broad-based overview educational sessions on their products and systems. I think the offer of knowledge and education would help us all to attract and develop more young people in the industry.
Everywhere I went there were signs that companies are looking for people. Money may be part of the answer but the marine industry will need to offer more to attract and motivate the talent we need for future success and knowledge may be the key.
