TRADE DISPUTE QUAGMIRE
Last week we wrote in this column about "The Art Of The Deal" as the boating industry in Canada reeled from the announcement of new 10% retaliatory tariffs on boats being imported from the United States.
Things are certainly happening fast. Only days later, president Trump arrived in Canada to participate in the G-7 Summit in Charlevoix Québec. News footage at the time initially suggested that things might go well, but at the end of the conference the president of the United States refused to endorse the Communique coming out of the summit - the only nation to refuse.
After he left Canada the president tweeted: "Based on Justin's false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!"
Worse, as the president flew to the Singapore meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, he turned and slammed Trudeau and Canada adding an even further personal attack, tweeting: "PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he "will not be pushed around." Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!"
Clearly, the president is not about to drop his 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminum and we have to expect the Canadian government now cannot walk back the 10% tariffs on American-built boats and engines that come into force July 1st.
How the boat builders and dealers handle this could be debated, but my guess is that we have to up the prices by 10% as of July 1.There doesn't look to be a fast end to this escalating situation.
