THE HALFWAY POINT
I like to think of August 1st as the halfway point of the summer. I know it's not, but I feel good about the idea. I would love to see another two or three months of this fabulous weather, summer weekends, parties on the dock…you know what I mean.
The industry has been going flat out since April and for many of our readers, August might just be a last sprint to Labor Day when things finally slow down, the boats start coming in for storage, and the city folk all head back to school, their jobs and their traditionally hectic pace of the fall.
Before the young people all go, you might take a moment to think of any who seemed to take an extra interest in the boats, your marina, your shop…
It seems to me that some of the young people you have as customers, will be feeling positive about life in cottage country, about boats and boating and maybe they will be open to the idea of a career in the marine industry.
There are 21 Career Opportunity ads currently posted in News Week and some are brand new opportunities, but a few are old and still unfilled. We call the companies and check regularly. We know it's hard to find people and harder still, to find great people.
I hope this is about to change. This edition of News Week has one of the most important stories (for our industry) that we have run in years. Boating Ontario has done a salary survey among their members and they included questions about whether the work was seasonal or full time.
Take a moment to read this and let's start talking. Young people need to know that they can earn a living in this business - some can earn a very good living. They can have full time employment and they can live and work in the beautiful area they love.
There are many opportunities for marine industry job training but what we need are applicants. If more young people knew our industry offers a good wage and a great lifestyle, there would be far more students interested in the boat business.
Read the story "Boating Ontario Digs Deep Into the Career Path of a Service Technician" and share that with the young people you know. You might be doing us and them, a favour!
