The Future of Our Industry
That's a simple one - it's people. People are the future of our industry and on the good news front, I expect that with the continued strong economy and torrid pace of technological change and disruption hitting so many industries, the vacation escape to cottage country and to the boat will be ever more desirable. Our industry should do well that way.
The bad news is that this same scenario attracts young people to the city and to what they think are the exciting high tech career opportunities. We continue to need young people to enter our industry.
In a story in the Financial Post October 11, I read that Canada has high youth unemployment concurrent with a national labour shortage. What?
We already know we have a struggle attracting and retaining marine technicians. The story explained that job vacancies are on the rise in agriculture, transportation, manufacturing, and in jobs such as plumbing, mechanics and electricians.
The author's conclusion was that it's time the high schools starting teaching and promoting the value of these career choices instead of continuing the traditional push for university.
This is a critical issue for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, (CFIB) and their members. While youth struggle to find jobs, small businesses are currently going through a significant labour shortage across the country, with nearly 400,000 jobs left unfilled. It's no surprise that small business owners say this is the top reason they can't grow their business.
To try to assist the boating industry in attracting more young people, we created a section in this newsletter for Career Postings and Career Profiles and as soon as we announced this, several people generously volunteered their own employment opportunities and profiles to get this going.
But what we need now is to get more people to visit those profiles to see that there are rewarding and enjoyable career opportunities in this industry. We also are encouraging employers to send in their job postings.
We have included another story on this today (see the Feature below) and we encourage our readers to share this valuable information with young people they know. I hope you will take a moment to look at these Career Profiles again. And, perhaps you will volunteer your own profile.
