Blowing Our Own Horn
In a recent conversation with Pride Marine Group, I learned that they had produced their own recruitment video and they have kindly offered to share it with the industry in News Week this week.
We've often talked about our chronic shortage of skilled technicians and it seems that the shortages are at least continuing, if not getting worse. Georgian College, Quadrant Marine Institute, Nova Scotia BoatBuilders Association and a few others in Canada are offering training, but the first step has to be to attract an applicant. What I really liked about the video that Pride Marine created is that they focused on glamour shots of the boats, running out on the water on a sunny day with Pride Marine staff driving, and that starts the process of selling the lifestyle of being in this industry.
Several different Pride Marine employees were used as spokespeople. Everybody was well-dressed, the facilities were clean and brightly lit and they hit on several very important points; paying competitive wages, offering year-round employment, offering additional training and in particular, the lifestyle opportunities. The visuals were focusing on the lifestyle and talking about water testing all different kinds of boats. It looks really attractive.
I think a lot more companies in our industry should be blowing their own horn this way.
The Pride Marine Group video certainly sets the bar high, but I think many of the top marinas should have a video of this sort on their website landing page with a headline like, "Join our team of marine professionals - click here to see our video"
Have a look at what the Pride Marine Group has done. I think it might inspire your efforts: https://vimeo.com/291578169
