Boating Industry Canada's Newsweek

Perception is Reality….

Boating BC's Annual Conference opens today and it is the premier event for the Western marine trades with great networking opportunities and an environment rich in camaraderie through shared activities, receptions and great entertainment.

The Boating Ontario Annual Conference opens Monday November 26, just one week later. Our leader, John Kerr, and Bob Nicoll, our man on the West coast, of Kerrwil Publications is attending the Boating BC Conference while I'll be at the Boating Ontario Conference with our Publisher Greg Nicoll.

We believe in the importance of meeting our friends and peers in the business and we hope you do too.

With these two great industry events both in the fall, it's no surprise that each November, our industry feels just a little bit stronger and more united than the year before.

Last week, I spent almost an hour on the phone with Shelley McIvor of the Quadrant Marine Institute. We were discussing the differences between the BC marine employment environment and the situation in Ontario.

Quadrant is busy and their students are training for a sure career in the marine industry in BC. The business runs year-round and good people will enjoy a great career. Quadrant has a relationship with the Nova Scotia Boat Builders Association and they license the Quadrant courses.

On both coasts, the marine industry is recognized as a real career option offering year round employment. Tim Edwards and Shelly McIvor both expressed to me that they were attracting a reasonable number of "the right" people to join their industry.

If you saw our video last week with Rob Davidson from Georgian College and Rick Layzell of Boating Ontario, you will know Ontario does not enjoy the same number of young people entering the marine industry and training for a career with us.

Obviously, the point of contact with our Ontario, and probably our Quebec marine industry, is at the marina level. When our customers meet our technicians, see our marine shop facilities, or view our back lots as they drive in and out - what do they see?

Do our shops look like "cool" places to work? Are the yards full of interesting late-model boats? Do our people look like they are having fun and enjoying a good life?

In this edition of News Week, spend some time thinking about the "Five Ways To Leverage Your Talent Brand To Attract Great Candidates" by Jeremy Eskenazi. His short essay encourages employers to use your employer brand to your best advantage. An employer brand is what employees and candidates say about your company and the work experience when you're not in the room.

If you need help with that, (or you are not even sure what your employer brand looks like), consider becoming an entrant into the Employer of Choice Awards program that Boating Industry Canada supports. See Jeff Doran's story in this issue of News Week and consider what it could do for you next year.

Perception is reality…if people perceive your business as a great place to work, the reality is that more people would consider working for you. It'll be a competitive business in Ontario in the coming year and all across the country really. Are you prepared for that?
