New Technologies Just Keep on Coming
As predicted in last week's column, the Miami boat show last week did indeed prove to be a showcase for some stunning new technology. Combining the relatively recent development of joystick docking with new types of sensors and controls, we are rapidly moving towards the introduction of self-docking boats.
This week, on another front, the Beneteau Group has shown a foiling powerboat. This is obviously at the experimental stages right now, but foiling powerboats could be the fast and fuel-efficient technology of the future. Beneteau has gained significant experience with foils on sailboats. These days, all the high-performance sailing yachts are foilers and they are fast!
Coincidentally, I happened to be sailing in Annapolis on board a Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 with a group of other journalists, and as we sailed around the bay aboard the luxurious and rapid Oceanis 46.1, a single dinghy sailor kept blasting past us sailing a Moth - a foiling dinghy. The entire boat was a foot and a half or more above the water and he was sailing at powerboat speed. Remarkable!
I hope you enjoy reading about Beneteau's new foiling powerboat this week. I don't know what to expect for next week - the new technologies just keep on coming!
