Fueling the Discussion
In the March 12th edition of News Week we raised the question of ethanol, marine grade fuels and how marinas need to make their customers aware of the differences in fuel that lead to differences in performance and cost.
I'm pleased to report that I received several emails. I wanted to share this one with our readers; Dave Brown of Brown's Marina has a section on their website and he has kindly offered to share this with our News Week readers. Have a look at this: https://www.brownsmarina.com/learn-about--tech-tips. Dave refers us to the first link on this page: WHAT IS REFORMULATED GASOLINE (RFG)?
He explained that he has included this in their spring newsletter for some time now, but Dave feels that all his customers are well trained in these ethanol and fuel issues now, so he leaves it on his site as a reference for others.
Before we leave the subject, Dave explained that he is lucky in that their local fuel supplier can provide them with non-ethanol fuel and Dave thinks that's true for most Canadian sellers.
It was interesting to read that Dave was not sure if distributors can offer ethanol-free fuel in the U.S. He has heard that many U.S. fuel outlets along the St. Lawrence River on the U.S. side, buy their fuel from a Cornwall, Ontario seller to get ethanol free fuel.
There are likely differences in availability across different regions of Canada, but I just noticed that the Shell station in my area has again placed the label on their pumps that Shell V-Power (at least at this location) is ethanol-free.
Are you able to buy ethanol-free fuel for the coming season? We would be interested to know.
Also, we are running an unusual story in this edition about a company called Armacell. It looks like this has nothing to do with boating, but this global company has a Canadian office and they have now re-cycled over 1 billion PET bottles to make core materials. That's good but the PET containers they are using are ones that have been rejected for food uses. They can produce strong core materials from the re-cycled PET and these may find their way into boats.
That's even better. For the sake of reducing plastics that eventually get into our water, let's hope companies like Armacell continue to make headway on this.
