Questions for today, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow — must be seen
Should you focus on the short term or the long term when making business decisions? This is a question that deserves reflection and which our contributor Rick McCarten puts some thought to here. Your workforce is valuable and you know it all the more so since everyone agrees it's a scarce resource. What influences it in a positive or negative way? Pausing on technological developments and business decisions, and their effects in the short, medium or long term, we met in an interview Lior Levy, who stresses the importance for companies in the electrical sector of defending their values and supporting causes such as Habitat for Humanity. We present to you in this issue a recent project on which she worked.

Long Term Versus Short Term
By Rick McCarten
I think it was Bill Gates who said the Internet will not have an effect on society short term, but will have a profound effect on us long term. Long term versus short term fascinates me. Making the call for one over the other can determine the success (or failure) of companies today. Using Bill Gates' long-term Internet effect example, means that business decisions about the Internet will not necessarily show short-term gain, but will show "profound" gain in the long term. Most of the time.

Here He Comes Again… The RSM
By David Gordon
Over the past few weeks I've spoken to and met with a number of manufacturer reps. Inevitably I've been asked a common question that elicits much discussion: "What is the role of a manufacturer regional sales manager?" The reason for the question is many reps comment about the regional manager who calls and says, "I'm coming into your territory and I want to spend a few days with you and your team, and with distributors and customers."

Human Capital: The Last Piece of the Workforce Productivity Puzzle
By Bill Howatt, Rochelle Morandini, Jesse Adams and Mike Roberts
Workforce productivity can be defined as the amount of services or goods a workforce produces within an expressed time and budget. Senior leaders, when setting their expectations and measures for organizational success, must factor in workforce productivity with respect to what influences it both positively and negatively. If this is not done, the risk for failure intensifies.

House Prices Unchanged in February, and 0.1% Higher YOY
New house prices at the national level were unchanged in February, despite growth in some of the housing markets surveyed. In February, builders in 9 of the 27 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) surveyed reported higher prices for homes they sold. London and Windsor (both up 0.6%) registered the largest increases as builders in both CMAs tied the gains primarily to higher construction costs.

Value of Building Permits in February Declined 5.7% from January
Canadian municipalities issued $7.8 billion worth of building permits in February, down 5.7% from the previous month. The decline was largely due to lower construction intentions for multi-family dwellings. The value of permits for residential buildings declined 8.5% in February to $4.9 billion, the lowest level since April 2017. The decrease was largely the result of lower construction intentions for multi-family dwellings in Ontario and British Columbia. Despite the monthly decline, the value of multi-family permits has shown notable strength over the past year.

Automation and Education: A Canadian Perspective
The future direction of automation and its associated fields, and their effects on the workforce, remain up for debate. However, there is consensus that education and cross-sector cooperation will be key factors in determining the potential for innovation. This makes talent a key factor for manufacturers when choosing locations for manufacturing. From this perspective, governments that bolster their education related policy can have a positive effect on their local markets, as well as the commercialization of new innovations. This "next-shoring" — when manufacturers locate operations close to skilled labour and centres of innovation— will require support from education and government stakeholders to fully realize the benefits that automation presents.
