What Plan? Your Plan.....Strategic Priority #3 - Volunteers
The 2016-2020 Strategic Plan lists five key Priorities and Volunteers are one of the five. There are 3 Goals outlined in this section of the Plan and much work has been accomplished on Goal #1. However, progress has been slow on the overall Priority, as the remaining Goals have not been assigned. Briefly, some of the accomplishments to date are: ..Creation of a Volunteer Committee, focused on developing or encouraging development of different operating models, so that volunteer capacity can be created.

Happy 100th Birthday - P/C/C Doug Comber, JN
Family and friends gathered at the Peterborough Naval Academy on the 13th of January to join Past Chief Commander Doug Comber, JN to celebrate his 100 Birthday! As a former WWII officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, Doug's passion for the water and his knowledge of boating continued to blossom throughout his many years with CPS-ECP.Doug currently resides in Bethany, Ontario where he lives on a farm with his daughter and son-in-law. Thirty years ago, Doug introduced Scottish Highland Cows to the farm.

Staff Milestones Celebrated at the National Office
Chief Commander Chuck Beall made some special presentations during the annual Staff Christmas Lunch on December 14, 2018. Lynda Green, was presented with a plaque acknowledging her 30 years of service to CPS-ECP! Her work extends to many individuals in the organization including course material orders, Ship's Store, volunteers, new members and student services. CPS-ECP has benefitted greatly from having Lynda on its National Office staff.

Celebrity sighting at Toronto Boat Show
The Toronto International Boat Show kicked off last Friday and the week has been booming. The very first Women's Day event at the Toronto Boat Show on Sunday was a huge success despite the scary cold temperatures and weekday crowds have been enjoying the huge collection of boats, accessories and special presentations. Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach, Mike Babcock made an appearance at Saturday's show.

From the Helm of Adamant 1 - Blog 23 - Back on board. Hooray!
After an autumn in Canada, we arrived back in northern Florida at Adamant 1 on January 3rd and with fingers crossed, we opened the hatch to find no mould, mildew, bugs or critters! That was a relief. We also found the one solar panel we had left connected had kept the batteries charged. There would be no repeat of last year's problems! The boat was filthy with dust from the two pulp and paper mills in the city, but a couple days of intense scrubbing fixed that problem.

Bastien Boats of Hamilton, ON
Henri L. Bastien (1831-1923) left his hometown near Montreal at the age of 18 and spent several years in the U.S. working as a ship's carpenter. In the mid-1850s he settled in Hamilton and built houses for nearly a decade. Then, in 1865 he returned to boat building, taking over a boathouse on the bay at the foot of the Picton Street. He completed a new boathouse in 1876 and established a large complex of buildings, including a two-storey factory, another shop for repair work, a livery boathouse, and some large storage sheds.

Sarah Douglas Blog: Qualifying for the Pan Am Games
There are many goals that I have set out in my life, they can be categorized into three: personal, sailing and career. Currently, majority of the goals that I am seeking are in the sailing category as I work towards the 2020 Olympics. This past weekend, I am happy to have achieved a goal of qualifying for the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru. The Pan Am Games is a once in a lifetime experience and I am so excited to be representing Canada this coming summer.

Electrical Installations - Part 2: fuses and breakers
Fuses and breakers are collectively called 'overcurrent protection' - and these come in many different shapes, styles and sizes. Their purpose is the same: to prevent a situation where a larger than intended electrical current is running through the circuit, which puts the circuit at risk of overheating, fire and damage to equipment. A fuse is a thin metal strip that melts or breaks when too much current flows through it. A breaker is an automatic switch that opens when too much current flows through it.

UK Sailmakers is back in Ontario
UK Sailmakers is re-opening in Ontario under the ownership of long time Canadian sailor Randy St. Jacques. Randy has 50 years of experience both racing and cruising on many boats. He is a very busy racer himself and active in the FPSC Fifty Point Sailing Club and in PHRF-LO with a C&C 30 MkII at Fifty Point. For the last ten years Randy as sold sails for several brands, but has now moved to UK Sailmakers. It has been a year since Brian Chapman unexpectedly passed away leaving Toronto sailors at a loss.

Shellbacks Report and Programming
The Shellbacks Club of Toronto started their Christmas season with their annual Moosemilk luncheon. Gathering at Mimico Cruising Club, the Shellbacks had a delicious meal complemented by moose milk (egg nog and rum) and other Christmas delicacies. The buffet and dessert table that Mimico put out was spectacular. The Moosemilk Luncheon is also the time for sailors and friends to catch up on the season just finished and to look forward to the time when boats are again on the water.

BVI and Moorings full tilt for back-to-normal Spring Regatta
After last year's large-scale efforts to stage the 2018 BVI Spring Regatta in the wake of Hurricane Irma, organizers and participants are looking forward to a more "normal" event this year. The stage is set for the 48thedition to begin on March 25-31, 2019. The Moorings will once again be sponsoring the Spring Regatta and will be providing 3 Power Catamarans to be utilized by the Race committee. The Moorings yachts are available for charter to enter into the regatta as well!

Cuba Rally to celebrate Habana 500 this May
The City of Havana, Cuba, is celebrating its 500th anniversary this year and thanks to our friends at Florida Yachts Charters, you can be part of it. The Cuba Rally kicks off in Key West on May 3, then heads out from the Stock Island Marina across the Strait of Florida for Havana's Hemingway Marina on May 4. On May 5 a program of cultural and boating events with a healthy sprinkling of fabulous parties kicks off making it a week to remember.
