Why Should My Squadron Offer Recreational Vessel Courtesy Checks?
It's time again for me to talk about why Squadrons should offer Recreational Vessel Courtesy Checks (RVCCs). Many Squadron Officers continue to talk about how their Squadron's course participation, and hence membership, is down and continuing to drop. Squadrons and their members can do something about this and here is your opportunity.

Safer for the Environment Boat Care Products
In the late 1970's myself and a lady friend decided leave our corporate positions to spend 3 years backpacking around the globe. Already having a bent to be an Eco friendly people, this odyssey was a real shock to both of us. We travelled with a tent through about 75 countries, and being that close to the ground, we were stunned at some of the total misuse of our globe in many of these countries: Rivers on fire…

What Plan, Your Plan…. Strategic Priority #5 Communications
An ongoing flow of information between our three levels, Squadron, District and National, is the prime target of the Communications Priority. At times action is requested and required, and at other times important messages need to be shared. This flow is not one-way, the lines of communication must go back and forth if we are to maintain a viable network encompassing all our needs.

This means WAR - Bringing back the Women's Regatta at RHYC
The idea was born over beers and a bonfire, as all great ideas are. After two years of meeting in the off seasons, the idea of bringing back the Women's Annual Regatta (WAR) is coming to fruition in July 2019. The intent is simple: host an all women's regatta which is both competitive enough to challenge experienced racers and inclusive enough to draw new sailors to the race course.

LYRA Race Week 2019: July 28 - Aug 4
The first LYRA race week was formed in 1884 at the Queens Hotel in Toronto. It is believed that LYRA is the oldest association of yacht clubs on the continent; no other similar body is known to exist in North America in 1884. The original constitution stated "The object of the Association shall be to encourage yacht building and yacht racing, and to establish and enforce uniform rules for the government of all races in which the yachts of two or more clubs compete."

March 14, 2019: A winter retreat double header
Unfortunately this is not a picture from a boat but was taken on the evening of February 27, 2019 looking out over the Great Sound in Bermuda and over the course used for the Americas Cup in 2017 but it does show the beauty of the water and why we are attracted to boating. The second half of the double-header comes from Patrick at Mango Yacht Charters, based in Oakville, ON, but wintering in the Caribbean. Don't fret, kids - spring begins next week!

Cars On Board
Road Test of Porsche Cayenne S
My history with the Cayenne goes back many years, as I was at the launch of the original vehicle back in 2003. It was a big departure from the norm, as the Porsche cars we were used to at the time were all sports cars. My test vehicle was the Cayenne S, which is the middle model of the regular conventional Cayenne line. The S I had was powered by the 2.9L Bi-Turbo V6 that produces a neck snapping 434Hp. and 406 lb/ft of torque which gives this vehicle a 0 to 100 kph…

Bob Lush
Our friend Bob Lush was a sailing dilettante but also an adventurer who will be remembered as an interesting and witty guy. He went from renting an Albacore at the Toronto Island Marina in 1970 to 1976 in the OSTAR, solo transatlantic in 54 days. He went on to the Bermuda One-Two (in a Shark!) and Round Britain races…

Boating History
Gilbert Motor Boat Company
Nelson Gilbert (1854-1921) began building canoes in Brockville in the 1890s, a time when the sport was very popular. In 1904 he put up a shop and boathouse on the waterfront at 15 Jessie St., where he produced canoes, sailboats and rowboats, with plans to start building motorboats as well. Built of cedar or mahogany, Gilbert's launches were high-quality vessels ranging from 20-35 feet in length. The company also produced its own brass hardware and fittings.

There is a Fire at the Marina!
On February 10, 2019 the Sidney Fire Department responded to a fire at the Port Sidney Marina. This was followed by a fire at the Cedar Grove Marina on March 1st in North Saanich.
