Clean Water? It's a No Brainer.

While spending some quality time on a smaller lake this past weekend my friends and I noticed some cottagers who were prepping an older boathouse to be repainted. Good idea, right? This vintage building was completely overhanging the water; the painters were up on their ladders at different spots and began scraping at the old (likely lead) paint with assorted tools. The paint was falling directly into the water. Their toddler was swimming a few feet away at the dock. Lead is poison and any type of paint or even cleaning chemicals in any waterway is poor behaviour....for the fish, for the people eating the fish, for the swimming toddler, for the other aquatic life. When approached about the issue the people scraping the paint said 'It's not much paint considering the size of the lake' (!). A simple tarp under the ladders would have caught the paint chips. We even offered them one. Environmentally considerate maintenance and cleaning practices = clean waterways = sustained life and enjoyment of our lakes, rivers and oceans. It's a no brainer.
