Boaters without borders
Today we stretch our hand out in warmth to our neighbours to the south in Trumpland. Despite what may be happening at airports, in NAFTA boardrooms or at unguarded crossing points in Manitoba, we boaters still love you. Yes we do!
Do you hear that French being spoken in Plattsburgh NY as the boating season gets underway? Not a throwback to the courier-du-bois heritage of upstate New York, it's boat owners from la belle province who keep Lake Champlain afloat by parking their boats on the US side, renting docks then shopping for beer and fenders all summer. Plattsburgh's primary (only?) raison d'etre is to accommodate Canadian boaters as evidenced by the flags on every single transom at the marinas.
On Lake Ontario, small ports like A-Bay, Wilson NY, and Youngstown would scramble but for Canuck visitors. I particularly love the city of Erie PA with its perfect harbour, endless boating facilities and dozen brew pubs. The Maritime Provinces share racing with Maine. The Victoria Thunderbird fleet is virtually one with the Seattle fleet.
So dear fellow Canadians, while visiting domestic ports is a source of pride, America needs us to sustain its lovely waterfronts and shore facing towns. Don't let the border dampen your enthusiasm; they need us now more than ever.
