Sharks and Cavaliers
There is a wide variety of boats in this great country but two have a very compelling backstory. Both are just 24-footers, both designed in Canada and both enormously popular as first boats and long term keepers. Why? Boat tastes come and go over the decades but these both were affordable, are still wonderful to own and do their job brilliantly.
The Shark 24 was born in Ontario in 1957 (60 years ago!) and today there are around 2,000 sailing in Canada, the US and in Europe where they are still built. The Class racing schedule just came out and for 2018 it is packed with events. Built initially by designer George Hinterholler, the quickish racer/cruiser was a foundation of C&C, Canada's historic boat marque.
The Doral Cavalier was designed around 1985 in Grand'mere, Quebec and there are lots (how many?) still around. Packed into a small if boxy package, the pocket power cruiser fit the budget while reliably accommodating a family's cruising dreams in surprising comfort and style. The Cavalier helped Doral become the biggest Canadian success story of the 80s and 90s going on to build some industry-defining beauties like the Prestancia.
Two great boats we can all be proud of. When you see one on the water this summer, give them a loving wave.
