Who Do You Remember During Your 2 Minutes?
This week marks the occasion of Remembrance Day. I have noticed that Canadians, young and old, are particularly good at not only taking pride in our veterans but also recognizing their sacrifice and the significance of our freedom. While standing at the cenotaph on the 11th we have the opportunity to be able to think of those veterans who have been close to us and those we may not know as we privately acknowledge our gratitude. Usually my good friend and Canadian Yachting reader, John Jamieson, would be in attendance at the service, in his dress coat adorned with a poppy and with his two Collies leashed at his side, paying his respects. John was a decorated naval officer in the Canadian Navy. He was also an avid sailor on the Great Lakes and loved his spot on Georgian Bay more than any other. He retired a few years back and was always humble about his prestigious military career. Well, John passed away too young this past summer and yesterday at the cenotaph I thought of him and his dog-friends and how they would have been standing there no matter the weather on Remembrance Day. Thank you, John and all veterans, for protecting our great country.
