The Spring of Youth

If you read Paul Henderson's opinion piece in this publication or followed the controversy elsewhere in the media regarding the Olympics and that organization's apparent path of destroying grassroots sailing fleet, you may have wondered what the fuss is about.

We feel this is very important to you whether you are a sail racer or not. If you couldn't care less about racing or own a fine power boat, should you care?

But here's the thing. Where will boat owners come from? Last week Sail Canada appointed a new high performance director. How does this impact those of us who are a long way from high performance? The thinking is that young people who start in Lasers may go the Olympics on our behalf but much very likely will develop a love for boats that lasts forever.

In February, the looking-ahead CEO of Germany's Boot Show told me his organization is promoting one design sailing and youth training to promote the whole sport. Their halls are filled with big boats - power and sail - even the very biggest boats available anywhere, but research shows young sailors ultimately become their exhibitors' customers

Boaters everywhere decry the lack of interest from our kids, but those young people are the future. Boating is exciting when you start young. So it's in our interest to closely follow the Olympic debate, Sail Canada's initiatives, your provincial body's efforts and any other ways to get youth out on the water.

Here is the rebellion of the World Sailors: https://chn.ge/2w7pu7Q
