Low-tech genius
Armed with a 16mm film camera, John Biddle made his way around the sailing scene shooting as he found thrills and interesting tales. Each winter, when his adventures were done he'd edit four of these episodes into a 90 minute show and take it on the road mostly to yacht clubs across the US and into Canada.
This was cinema like no other. I caught his act several times including at the Oakville Library several decades ago. Even then before the digital revolution, his presentations were strikingly anachronistic. Biddle stood on the stage narrating his footage in a deadpan but riotous flat New Englandese. Geeky home movies more than cinemascope, but with a viewpoint and insight that only a hardcore devotee could capture.
John Biddle, who died in 2008 made over 3,000 presentations between 1956 and 1997, many here in Canada. The annual film night was always loved and applauded. Last week, Gary Jobson inducted Biddle into the US National Sailing Hall of Fame. Bravo
