It's Complicated

As I tucked my boat in, it struck me that owning boats requires a long list of skills. That's a good thing - we learn, we enjoy.

Compare docking a small boat versus parking a Civic in the Walmart lot. The car doesn't have to deal with crosswinds, mooring lines, currents or fenders. If the engine sputters, you have repair crews close at hand and tow trucks if they're not. If your boat needs attention in some distant cruising ground, mostly you fix it yourself.

Then there are the bigger boats many of us aspire to. Now it's time to learn more about navigation, electronics, maintenance and diesel technology. If it's a sailboat, you need to brush up on the Bernouli effect and other hydrodynamics principles. If you race that sailboat, you need a couple of psychology degrees and a good personal trainer.

Boating isn't like very many things; more complicated and, yes, also more rewarding. The many faceted expertise involved presents a lifelong learning experience.
