Signs of fun to come
Risking injury on the skating rink that used to be the parking lot where my boat is wintering, I walked toward her and promised great things. My footing was shaky but my confidence was firm.
This winter we have heard from eager boaters right across the country who are getting ready for the waters to warm and the good times to roll. Yes, it's been a brute for weather and the whole country seems wrapped up in a weary string of gloom bucket news and inane tariffs on aluminum.
But against that, new ideas are popping like crocuses. Below, you can read about the rejuvenation of the WAR regatta in Hamilton in this issue. We have reported on hot new fleets of Vikings, about zippy foiling powerboats and we have more in the hopper like a good times regatta aimed at younger sailors who want an atmosphere with food trucks and affordable beverages that we will preview next week.
This is going to be one humming spring and summer filled with new happenings. Share yours with our readers via our email then get your shorts ironed for an energetic boating season.

There is a Fire at the Marina!
On February 10, 2019 the Sidney Fire Department responded to a fire at the Port Sidney Marina. This was followed by a fire at the Cedar Grove Marina on March 1st in North Saanich. I had heard of the specialized equipment and training that the Town of Sidney fire Department had developed to combat these types of fire emergencies. So, I headed up to Sidney to meet with Deputy Fire Chief Mike Harman and Fire Chief Brett Mikkelsen to find out more about their operations.

Top Pick of Resources - Print and Online
Recently, I've been asked about my most used reference books and websites - so I thought I'd share my favourites. By no means is this a comprehensive list - and each of these books and website aren't the authority or final word on the subject. They are simply my favourites and most often referenced. If you're looking to build your library of useful texts and browser bookmarks, this is a good place to start!

March 14, 2019: A winter retreat double header
Unfortunately this is not a picture from a boat but was taken on the evening of February 27, 2019 looking out over the Great Sound in Bermuda and over the course used for the Americas Cup in 2017 but it does show the beauty of the water and why we are attracted to boating. The second half of the double-header comes from Patrick at Mango Yacht Charters, based in Oakville, ON, but wintering in the Caribbean. Don't fret, kids - spring begins next week!

Cars On Board
Road Test of Porsche Cayenne S
My history with the Cayenne goes back many years, as I was at the launch of the original vehicle back in 2003. It was a big departure from the norm, as the Porsche cars we were used to at the time were all sports cars. My test vehicle was the Cayenne S, which is the middle model of the regular conventional Cayenne line. The S I had was powered by the 2.9L Bi-Turbo V6 that produces a neck snapping 434Hp. and 406 lb/ft of torque which gives this vehicle a 0 to 100 kph…

Eight bells
Bob Lush
Our friend Bob Lush was a sailing dilettante but also an adventurer who will be remembered as an interesting and witty guy. He passed away last Wednesday at 80 in Montreal after a decade battling cancer. Bob had an impressive list of sailing accomplishments. He went from renting an Albacore at the Toronto Island Marina in 1970 to 1976 in the OSTAR, solo transatlantic in 54 days. He went on to the Bermuda One-Two (in a Shark!) and Round Britain races…

Safer for the Environment Boat Care Products
In the late 1970's myself and a lady friend decided leave our corporate positions to spend 3 years backpacking around the globe. Already having a bent to be an Eco friendly people, this odyssey was a real shock to both of us. We travelled with a tent through about 75 countries, and being that close to the ground, we were stunned at some of the total misuse of our globe in many of these countries: Rivers on fire…
