Can the Gold Cup go global?
The SSL Gold Cup is a brave new project coming out of the Star Sailor League, a program of series that attracts world-class sailors to compete for big prizes in Star boats. The Gold Cup takes on an even bigger assignment aiming to attract the biggest possible names in purpose built large one-design boats (47-foot compared to the 23 foot Star.)These big boats will have crews of five and each will represent a nation. Canada is one of the first 20 nations in the program; Richard Clarke, multi time Olympian and more, is our "Captain."
With its base in Switzerland and its brain in the Euro/international competitive world, the framers of this contest see it as a World Cup-like event with four knock out rounds of 16 boats/teams each funneling down into a huge championship and a winner. The calendar begins now with assembling 60 teams and an 80-week practice schedule leading us to Geneva where the final four teams duel to the death in October 2021.
Sounds pretty amazing. Big league sailing draws large audiences in Europe, South America, Australia, NZ but less so in North America. Could it? Will it? Will you and all Canadian sports fans be glued to the screen to watch and cheer? Will the kind of national pride that fills soccer stadiums and pubs around the globe roar for windward-leeward drama? Maybe - stay tuned!

Sealegs coming to BC Show
While there are various amphibious boats on the water today, none have measured up to SEALEGS Amphibious Watercraft in terms of construction, performance, and reliability. Each model seamlessly interfaces between water and land so users can drive right into the water and retract the wheels without even stopping - whether it's off a sandy beach or rustic shore.

Eight bells
John Booth - T-Birder, builder
Victoria sailors and Thunderbird folks everywhere are mourning the loss of John Booth on April 8. His mostly one person company, Booth Enterprises in Victoria, was a pioneer in converting the plywood boat into fiberglass, thereby extending and enhancing the life of the class. Booth's dedication and skill matched the Thunderbird's personality in many ways: eccentric but highly effective, unusual but beautiful in its own way, loved by those who knew it.

Improving WiFi on board
For less than US$2,500, Jim Leshaw, a lawyer who lives and works in Key Biscayne, Florida, installed an onboard wireless network that allows him to work from many remote locations. It was only 15 years ago that, while cruising in the Exumas, I met a man aboard his fishing boat, The Other Line. He explained that his aptly named boat permitted his assistant back at the office to accurately tell callers that "he is on the other line."

From the Helm of Adamant 1 - Blog 26: E$cape from Fort Pierce
After a delightful winter in the Bahamas, we decided at the end of March to head for the US. The weather continued to get hotter and the humidity was climbing daily. It was tough to drop the mooring ball, but we were suddenly excited about starting the trek home. We left Man-O-War on Saturday, spent one night in Treasure Cay…

Dockside Style - Jaguar F Pace S
Every once in a while as automotive journalist, I find a test vehicle that is just a suits my tastes just that little bit more than the others. Generally I am not a SUV kind of person, but the F Pace is just that little bit special in the fact that you have the room to put lots of gear into it, plus lots of room for four adults (five in a pinch) and best of all it handles like a sports car.

Canvaswork - Mooring and tonneau covers, dodgers and biminis
Each spring, I tend to notice canvas. I wish it was because it's been immaculately maintained and looks perfect when installed. I notice it because it's a pain. Shrink wrap is removed, canvas is installed. Strataglass is fogged, rips and tears are evident, zippers are broken. In short, repairs are required. Lets face it, boat canvas takes a beating: it's exposed to the elements: wind, rain and sun…
