Message From The Editor
In this issue of Drives & Control Solutions be sure to read the article about Understanding Torque Ripple in Servo Motors by Warren Osak, CEO of Electromate. And have a close look at Festo's whitepaper on Piezo technology in Pneumatic Valves. Also interesting in this issue is Bosch-Rexroth's cabinet-free drive technology and the partnership extension between Endress+Hauser and Westburne to bring automation solutions to Manitoba. And as always if you have any feedback or would like to contribute your thoughts and opinions to Drives & Control Solutions feel free to reach out to the editor.

Servo Motors
Understanding Torque Ripple in Servo Motors
Before specifying torque ripple for a servo system, the mode of operation for the system should be determined: closed torque or closed velocity loop. If the servo system is used as a tensioning device (ie. film, web drives) it will be used in a torque control servo loop with no velocity feedback. In this application, inherent torque ripple components of the motor and those induced from the drive amplifier will be present. If the servo system is used as an axis feed servo (ie. grinder axis drives), it will be controlled in a closed velocity loop.In these applications the velocity loop bandwidth will determine how well the servo can compensate for its inherent torque ripple components.

Festo White Paper: Piezo Technology in Pneumatic Valves
Piezo valves are often a better alternative to conventional solenoid valves, especially in the areas of flow and pressure control and as directly controlled proportional valves. They are small, lightweight, extremely precise, very durable, incredibly fast and above all they save energy. For example, piezo valves do not need any energy to maintain a switching status. They therefore generate virtually no heat. In ATEX applications, many piezo valves are classified as intrinsically safe. What is more, piezo valves can potentially be operated without any noise. Another key advantage is that they always work proportionally - and are very wear-resistant too. These properties make piezo valves ideal for use in, for example, the semiconductor industry

Danfoss: Smart gloves improve working conditions
Noel Longere has been working at the Commercial plant in Trevoux, France, for 31 years. He is now in the packaging department, shipping the big blue compressors off to customers. As part of his job, in the old days he would pick up a scanner, then scan the compressor being shipped, leave the scanner in its place to move the compressor and take the scanner again. But now he puts on a glove when he starts at work. And with this glove with an integrated scanner he only needs to move his arm close to the compressor. The result: he and his colleagues are able to work faster, safer and in a more ergonomically way since they can work and scan at the same time.
