MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Small is beautiful, most of the time

But not always. Our Survey Says section is very popular. At a glance, we provide your answers to questions that inevitably come up in our workplaces. Are electricians better paid in some provinces than others? And wages, are they higher in large firms or it is better to own your own company? Answers to these questions are probably what explains the popularity of these surveys. Elsewhere in this week's issue, as we celebrate International Women's Day today we present a young woman who doesn't follow the beaten path. Good reading!

Lighting Plan to Illuminate Ottawa's Parliamentary Precinct

Ottawa Parliamentary Precinct The Parliamentary Precinct, which includes the Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the commercial Sparks Street, and the Confederation Boulevard, will be brought to light by an exterior lighting master plan created by Lemay and Lightemotion. Distributed according to four hierarchical levels of light, the illumination will reveal and reinforce the comparative prominence of the various buildings in the Parliamentary Precinct. Drawing its inspiration from the image of a diamond, the "Jewel in the Night" concept combines frontal and detail lighting to give the impression that the illuminations are outlined against a black sky. In certain locations, the play of shadow and light will bring out the dramatic and mysterious aspects of the Gothic Revival buildings on Parliament Hill, thus emphasizing the contrasts and the tensions in the landscape in the chiaroscuro style. Distributed according to four hierarchical levels of light, the illumination will reveal and reinforce the comparative prominence of the various buildings in the Parliamentary Precinct… Read More

Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE)'s Jennifer Taylor

Jennifer Taylor Jennifer Taylor is completing her PhD at the University of Toronto, focusing on the production of knowledge in renewable energy transitions, specifically focusing on interesting controversies such as the wind turbine health studies. She also teaches a course in environmental impact assessment and carries out research for Toronto Renewable Energy Cooperative. A favourite quote: "If you always do what you what interests you, at least one person is pleased" — Katherine Hepburn. "Any woman who has worked in the energy industry is familiar with the gender imbalance that plagues it. I think it's been really valuable for us to come together and support each other. We're bringing long overdue recognition to women's contributions to the industry and encouraging more women to pursue a career in sustainable energy. I'm on the academic sub-committee and we communicate WiRE's events to universities and colleges in southern Ontario, award bursaries to students to attend renewable energy conferences, and develop other networking and professional development activities for students and recent grads. I've also spent quite a bit of time as a volunteer at our trade show booth, talking to prospective members and the wider renewable community about WiRE and what we have to offer…" Read More

December 2015 Energy Use Down 6.8% YOY Due to Warmer Temperatures

Electricity Generation Dec 2015 Canada's demand for electricity totalled 49.5 million megawatt hours (MWh) in December, down 6.8% from the same month in 2014. Unseasonably warm weather in most of the country contributed to the decline in demand. Lower demand pushed generation down 6.5% to 53.9 million MWh, the lowest level for a month of December since 2003. Exports of electricity to the United States also declined year over year in December, falling 3.1% to 5.2 million MWh. This was the first year-over-year decrease in exports of electricity since October 2014. Much of the decline in exports reflects lower shipments from Quebec and Ontario as eastern U.S. states reported their warmest December temperatures in recorded history, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. Exports from British Columbia tempered the decline, rising 34.4%. Meanwhile, imports from the United States also decreased in December, totalling 0.8 million Mwh… Read More
