New technologies and best practices

If there is an industry sector that cannot be talked about without mentioning energy consumption savings, it's lighting since the advent of LED technology. With their long lifespan and energy-efficient properties, LEDS help to reduce the cost of operating industrial scale horticultural facilities, as is the case with other industrial facilities. The horticultural market promises to be of growing importance, but how to ensure that the products proposed will conform to the needs of this expanding market? We talk about it in this issue. Also, an interesting report on tests funded by the Lighting Energy Alliance and Natural Resources Canada on LED and HID horticultural luminaires. The latter are still heavily used in this market segment. We are ready to store potential energy, our colleague tells you about it in this issue, as well as devices that physically store energy already generated. To be read carefully. Good reading!

New CSA Test Method for Horticultural LEDs

By CSA Group
Horticulture An evaluation of the energy and economic performance of LED horticultural luminaires compared with high-pressure sodium (HPS) and metal halide (MH) horticultural luminaires has found that the LEDs cannot replace HPS luminaires on a one-for-one basis while still maintaining the original photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). The evaluation was conducted by the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and funded in part by Natural Resources Canada. Read More

Power Quality

Electrical Energy Storage

By Owen Hurst
Power Quality Power quality has always been a concern for the electrical industry, and as we have become utterly reliant on uninterrupted power, the issue of maintaining demand levels has become increasingly present. It is essential that power remain consistent and available, particularly in the event of a disruption in power generation. There are a number of solutions that have been developed but here I would like to take a closer look at the options presented by electrical energy storage. Energy storage is very promising for ensuring power quality during peak and for the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. Read More

Q & A Brought to You by Britech

Why are my self-regulating cables still drawing power and heating up despite the heat wave we're having?

Britech We've mentioned this before in a previous FAQ. Self-regulating heating cables never stop producing heat, they simply reduce the heat output according to the ambient temperature. Even on the hottest summer days these cables are warming the piping, often for no reason. In the case of heating cables on well lines and other domestic cold water lines when you hope to have a cold glass of water the water may be warm because the cables are still heating. Freeze-prevention pipe tracing cables are still warming the piping for no reason. Every heating cable should have a thermostat and, of course a GFI as required by code. Read More

From Our Last Issue Business Lessons from Volunteering
Sports have always formed a big part of my family's daily life. Whether it was coaching a group of five year olds tearing around a soccer field or pushing my burning legs up a hill for the tenth time, an increased heart rate and pouring sweat have always been important to my wife, my kids and me. We lived in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia for more than 10 years, an area with dense pine forests, rugged mountains, hot summers, and deep snow in the winters. With outdoor recreation being a primary attraction in the area, we quickly adopted the lifestyle and added cross-country skiing to our repertoire of activities. As is normal for us, we dove into it head first and before long my wife Rosanne and I were grooming trails and coaching the kids program every weekend.
