Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I — Instalment 43
By William (Bill) Burr
In this article: Tables Section — Part A. This section of the code contains 99 tables of essential information that is referenced by various rules of the Code. Tables referenced by rules are considered normative (mandatory) elements of the code. Note that the D tables of tabulated information in Appendix D are considered non-normative (non-mandatory) elements. The tables are in numerical order based on when that table was included in the code. Since this is a large section it will be discussed in two parts. This part covers Tables 1 to 35.

Networking Basics for Lighting Professionals
While designing and installing a network sounds daunting, it is easier once you understand the basics. In this post, we talk about networking basics for smart lighting. Two Women Find Their Dream Jobs in the Powerline Trades
Allison Wood and Dominique Rivet are two apprentices who had a wealth of career options available to them but chose to work in the powerline trades. They couldn't be happier with their decision. "The trades may be a little rough around the edges," says apprentice powerline maintainer Allison Wood. "But I love that it's never the same day twice." Wood, now a second-term apprentice with IBEW Local 636 in Niagara, had a lot of options when she graduated high school. With a lot of math and science courses under her belt and a track record of 80s and 90s in her classes, she was considering becoming a doctor. What changed her mind? "I didn't want to sit in a classroom for years, just racking up debt. I was also really enjoying my technical classes, and decided I like working with my hands just as much as I like mental stimulation."

Building Permits Rose 0.4% in September
Canadian municipalities issued $8.1 billion worth of building permits in September, up 0.4% from August. The national increase was driven by higher construction intentions in Quebec. The increase in the value of permits mainly stemmed from post-secondary institutions and nursing homes. Six provinces reported gains, led by Quebec. In the commercial component, $1.7 billion worth of permits were issued, down 3.3% from August. Permits for office buildings accounted for the majority of the decline. Q & A Brought to You by Britech
I have a flat roof and my roof drains often freeze up in the winter, which results in damage to the roof. What can I do?
Install heating cable on the roof around the drains covering an area about a meter in diameter, drop some cable down the drains to where the drain pipe enters the heated area of the building. Should the roof drains go to an external downspout, install heating cable inside the downspout to the point of discharge and or below the frost line to prevent freezing and rupturing the downspout and drain lines.
