Solutions for renewing the workforce
Decidedly, there is no more escaping artificial intelligence: it's closer and closer to us. Read about its integration into heating systems. Two weeks ago I met electricians who run the third generation of an electrical company. Founded by their grandfather, the company now employs a hundred people and the problem of workforce availability, training and retention cropped up a few times during the meeting. In this issue, we talk about internships and their positive effects on an organization's workforce as a whole. Canadian companies reported spending $14 billion in 2017 to prevent and detect cyber-security incidents, and to recover from them. More in this issue. Good reading!

Electrical Contractor and Supervisor Fined $110,000 for Falling Injury
In May 2016, an electrical worker fell from a ladder and suffered permanent injuries while performing electrical wiring work. An investigation by Ontario's Ministry of Labour led to a prosecution, which resulted in a $100,000 fine for the employer — a Bradford, Ontario electrical contractor and a $10,000 fine for the worker's supervisor. The court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge, which is credited to a fund to assist victims of crime.

Hiring Students Is Not a Charitable Act
By Mark Chapeskie
Contrary to popular belief, hiring students into companies today isn't a charitable act. It's a mutually beneficial one for students and the organizations they work for. In Canada, we are currently experiencing the lowest sustained unemployment numbers since before the 2008/9 recession at 5.9%. In the information and communications technology sector, unemployment is below 3%. To spell it out, this means that more and more organizations are competing for the same talent.

Impact of Cybercrime on Canadian Businesses in 2017
Canadian businesses reported spending $14 billion to prevent, detect and recover from cyber security incidents in 2017, which represented less than 1% of their total revenues. Approximately $8 billion was spent on salaries for employees, consultants and contractors who worked on cyber security, while $4 billion was invested in cyber security software and related hardware. Several other prevention and recovery measures accounted for the remaining $2 billion of the total expenditure. Annual average expenditures on cyber security differed greatly based on size of business in 2017. Large businesses spent…

Q & A Brought to You by Britech
I have a pipe tracing project in a food factory that requires different types of piping and different types of products in the pipe that need to be kept warm or hot. What should I be wary of?
Most of the piping in the plant will be stainless. Use the correct pipe fastening tape for the heating cable so that it won't harm the stainless steel. You may also require thermostats that can control the temperature (i.e., setpoint) in a very narrow band to ensure the liquid is neither too hot or too cold. Thermostats that control only minimum or maximum temperatures are not acceptable for this purpose.

Noramco 3 Conductor DriveRx VFD Cable+ 1000V
The three-conductor construction virtually eliminates magnetic fields outside of the cable, so induced voltage from one power cable to another or cross talk to control/instrumentation cables is also reduced. The continuous aluminum sheath (as opposed to interlocked armour) acts as an effective shield for high frequency "noise" that may still be produced and could affect adjacent control and instrumentation cables.
