Cultivate your networks well
If you ask me, the best resource we have to help us benefit from the new products, knowledge and technologies of our industry is each of us. This observation is not my own, but I could make it mine. It appears in an article from a contributor who has held all or almost all positions in our industry, from electrician to professor and consultant. We are constantly dealing with new technologies and almost all of them have opportunities for entrepreneurs. Is it possible to stay informed given the abundance of information available everywhere? She suggests a simple way: grow your networks. There is always someone who can advise you on the right tool or to present the right solution. I would add, keep reading EIN. Good reading!

An Electrician's Guide to Evolving with Technology
By Virginia Pohler
I started my path in this industry in 2001, and have been amazed at the continued and rapid changes in the industry since then. I remember the first time I used my new first-generation iPhone to help me troubleshoot problematic wiring in a motor starter, and how easy it was to snap some pictures to share with a colleague and discuss in real time. We now have every user manual, cut-sheet, code book, blueprint and product spec we could want in our hand wherever we are. The equipment we install and the tools we use are constantly changing too, from the surge in renewable energy, to Power over Ethernet and electric vehicle charging equipment, to pipe benders with more accurate controllers and connectors that snap into boxes without a locknut, to easier "shots" for copper thermite welding.

Study Shows Value of Sensor-controlled, Bi-Level Lighting
Considerable energy savings can be achieved with sensor-controlled, bi-level corridor lighting, according to results of a field demonstration led by the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The field demonstration looked at sensor-controlled, bi-level corridor lighting in a multi-family apartment building. "Saving lighting energy in multi-family corridors is becoming more feasible," says Jennifer Brons, who authored a report on the field demonstration. "LED luminaires can easily dim light output when corridors are vacant, rather than turning off entirely. Most importantly, the occupants had positive comments about safety and comfort with sensor-controlled, bi-level lighting."

Reality Checks
By Keith Sones
Sometimes life throws you a curveball. On occasion they are subtle, nudging you in a different direction or providing you an additional option when you are in the process of making a decision. And just as often they blast at you like a freight train, leaving you sweaty and trembling on the side of the tracks. No warning, no apology. But powerful. This was my December experience, and it gave me insight like nothing else could.

Value of Building Permits Rose 2.6% in November
Canadian municipalities issued $8.3 billion worth of building permits in November, up 2.6% from October. Higher construction intentions for commercial buildings drove most of the gain. The value of non-residential building permits rose 11.6% to $3.3 billion. In the residential sector, the value of building permits decreased 2.5% to $5.0 billion. Six provinces and 14 of 36 census metropolitan areas registered increases.

Q & A Brought to You by Britech
We recently had a fire hose cabinet valve freeze in our underground parking garage, yet when the pipe trace system was tested it performed perfectly. What could be the cause?
We often see pipe tracing temperature sensors installed on the piping near the thermostat that is located in an electrical room, often in the warmest part of the garage. Temperature sensors should be extended and installed near the roll up garage door or near the intake air louvres, where they can sense outdoor air temperatures rather than the warm air in the garage. A frozen fire hose cabinet will be useless if it's unable to supply water in case of a fire.
