A lot of lighting topics in this issue
Lighting and electrical trades change. The two come together more and more often. Kevin Willworth tells us that in general lighting applications there are two main approaches for operating luminaires directly from a low-voltage DC power supply: Emerge Alliance Distributed 24VDC power supply and Ethernet (PoE) power supply. These two solutions use distinctly different control approaches. Find out more about these methods in Kevin Willmorth's article. Also in this issue: the lighting upgrade challenges of a high volume traffic parking lot, and our continuing exploration of the CE Code. Good reading!

Path to North American Approval of Uncertified Electrical Products
Unique circumstances sometimes make it challenging, impractical, or even impossible for products to undergo the traditional certification process. This could be due to new technology that does not fit within a current standard, custom or imported equipment or impracticality due to limited volume production runs. Additionally relocating, modifying or refurbishing equipment introduces additional compliance requirements that if ignored can prevent a product from being placed in service. Codes & Standards
Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I — Instalment 46
By William (Bill) Burr
In this article: Annex J18, which is permitted, optionally, for use in additions, modifications, renovations or operation and maintenance of existing facilities employing the division system of classification. The rules of Annex J18 are normative (mandatory) where used and amend or supplement other requirements of the Code. Additional informative (non-mandatory) information is contained in Annex JB. Due to the size of this annex, it will be discussed in multiple parts. This is Part A.

Lighting Controls
Distributed Low Voltage Infrastructures and Their Impact on Controls
By Kevin Willmorth
While the majority of installations today are distributed high voltage (between 110V and 347V), the emergence of solid-state lighting technology has brought into question whether this is the most practical and efficient way to feed future lighting systems. The majority of conventional lighting products operate at power levels between 60W and 500W. Solid-state lighting products tend to operate at far lower levels of between 6W and 95W, operating at light source voltages of between 12V and 38V. At these lower demand levels, distributing high voltage to be converted to low voltage at every luminaire location is called into question.

Lighting Retrofit
Parking Garage Lighting Retrofit Reduces Energy Costs, Improves Safety and Aesthetics
Located in the heart of the Cote-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal is a large residential development known as Le Sanctuaire. The condominium buildings surround a courtyard with two low-rise commercial structures. Upgrading lighting in the underground parking garage was necessary for many reasons. While the existing fluorescent lights were doing an adequate job of lighting up the laneways, they did not project sufficient light over the parking spaces, reducing visibility for people accessing their vehicles. Furthermore, the fixtures were deteriorating and maintenance costs were high. The retrofit involved installing…

5 Reasons to Rethink CRE Capacity Planning
Work is now "what we do," not "a place where we go." This is how authors of a Deloitte report, "Advanced Workspace Strategies: Enabling Today's Mobile Workforce" described modern work environments and they couldn't have said it better. Work-life balance is gradually being phased out by work-life harmony as technology enables employees to assert more autonomy over their schedules. Unsurprisingly, more and more workers are choosing to scrap commutes and braid work tasks seamlessly into their lives.

Q & A Brought to You by Britech
My boss has asked me to monitor our heat tracing cables to determine how much power they use for freeze prevention and process requirements. How can I do this?
I suspect this is an industrial application and you may have multiple systems operating under various applications. Heat tracing controllers that monitor power usage and control each circuit are available. These are sophisticated controls that monitor GFCI trip, high temperature, low temperature, RTD failure, loss of power, and loss of conductivity. They can be connected directly to the building's operations centre through an RS 485 port for monitoring and control. They also should have a current monitoring function for each circuit to determine power usage and possibly help to determine whether tthe proper cable has been installed on the pipe or tank. We have found many instances where cut in the field, constant wattage cables are a better application than self-regulating cables for long life, energy saving and reduced hydro demand charges.
